Spreading the News

In our nation's early days, there were no phones, radios, or television sets to help people find out what was happening in other places.  Often, days or even weeks passed before people heard about an event.  How exciting it must have been to get a newspaper and find out what was going on in the rest of the world--to see the latest fashions or ads for things you might want to buy!

Find out how newspapers got started in your community by answering the questions below.  Some of the answers will be in your newspaper.  You could also call the newspaper office to find out.

  1. What was the name of your community's first newspaper? _________________________________________________________________

  2. When was it first published? __________________________________________

  3. What is the name of your community's newspaper today? (Choose one if you have more than one.) ____________________________________________________

  4. When was it first published? __________________________________________
